Cyber Essentials: The Basics Still Matter, Like They Do in Some of Our Favourite Movies

Because whether in cybersecurity or the movies, most disasters start when somebody ignores the basics.

Most Hollywood movie plots only exist because someone neglected the basics. In Jurassic Park, a perimeter failure lets the raptors out (classic firewall breakdown!). In WarGames, a default password almost triggers World War III, an access control nightmare.

In the real world, the threat dynamic is identical. While cyber-attacks often look complex, organisations are rarely compromised by sophisticated, nation-state threats. More often, it’s a failure of fundamental controls.

Regulations like the UK Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, alongside requirements across public sector procurement, UK GDPR, ISO 27001, and PCI DSS, all point to one objective: know your assets, secure your devices, control access, patch vulnerabilities, and protect your data.

In short: execute the basics properly.

That is what Cyber Essentials addresses. While it doesn’t cover backups, recovery testing, or incident response playbooks, it enforces five preventative controls required to operate a secure organisation (Highlighted by these box office hits!):

  • Jurassic Park: Perimeter controls fail and containment drops. That’s a firewall problem.
  • WarGames: Weak credentials and poor configuration nearly cause a global crisis. That’s access control gone wrong.
  • Mission: Impossible: The never-ending franchise centres on controlling sensitive data access. That’s identity and access management, Tom Cruise style.
  • The Matrix: Get’s a bit convoluted, but the plot features a focus on patching the program that is our reality.
  • Independence Day (A guilty pleasure of mine): Humanity is saved by a computer virus. A bit unrealistic, but it highlights the importance of malware protection.

Ignoring fundamental controls leads to predictable operational failures.

At XMA, we recognise the value of Cyber Essentials across our organisation and supply chain. However, Cyber Essentials is not our security Endgame. (Yes, that was an Avengers reference.)

We build layered security strategies and combine multiple platforms to identify, contain, and remove threats with deliberate redundancy. If one control misses a threat, another catches it.

XMA also integrates AI into our security tooling and team workflows. AI speeds up threat detection, automates routine responses, and improves visibility across our infrastructure. Unlike many films, where AI tends to become self-aware and threaten humanity, we’re using it for rather less dramatic purposes. Although in terms of AI in movies, Ex Machina remains a personal favourite.

Maintaining asset visibility, securing personal devices, deploying patches across diverse environments, and keeping up with evolving threat vectors are continuous challenges. Security isn’t a blockbuster movie premiere, it’s the behind-the-scenes work that keeps the doors locked and the dinosaurs inside the fence.

Cyber Essentials compliance isn’t a once-a-year audit task. It requires continuous monitoring, automation, and governance. Organisations that run controls continuously find audits uneventful – because security is integrated into daily operations rather than treated as a last-minute scramble.

A Cyber Essentials certificate isn’t proof of complete security. It is proof that you execute the baseline controls every organisation requires.

Because whether in cybersecurity or the movies, most disasters start when somebody ignores the basics. And unlike Hollywood, you don’t always get a sequel when things go wrong.
